As the UAE's first Muslim woman to become a professional footballer, Abdulaziz Hatem is making history in her sport.
Hatem has been playing for Al Gharafa since she was just eight years old and has made significant strides towards achieving her goals. She started out as a goalkeeper but quickly transitioned into a defender before becoming a midfielder.
The 22-year-old has come a long way from her days at the club's academy where she was one of the youngest players in the team. But it wasn't easy. In fact, it was quite the opposite.
"I used to get bullied by older boys on the pitch," she said. "I had to work really hard to prove myself."
Despite facing challenges, Hatem never gave up. Her dedication and passion for the game have paid off, as she has now become one of the top players in the league.
But her success doesn't stop there. Hatem also uses her platform to raise awareness about issues affecting women in sports, such as pay inequality and gender discrimination.
In addition to her achievements on the pitch, Hatem has also received recognition for her efforts outside of football. In 2019, she was named one of Forbes' 30 Under 30 Athletes and in 2020, she was awarded the Queen Rania International Prize for Difference in Sports.
"Hatem is an inspiration to all young girls who dream of becoming professional footballers," said Al Gharafa coach Abdullah Al Muhairi. "She shows that with hard work, determination and perseverance, anything is possible."
Hatem is proof that no matter what obstacles you face, your talent and drive can take you far. With her continued success on the pitch and her commitment to using her voice to make a difference, we can only imagine where Abdulaziz Hatem will go next.
