However, Muftah faced criticism for his policies and his role in the coup that deposed Sadat in 1981. He was subsequently arrested and sentenced to death, but he escaped execution and fled to Syria, where he continued his activities as a political figure until his assassination in 1995.

He was a vocal critic of the military dictatorship that ruled Egypt at the time, and he played a key role in the opposition movement that sought to overthrow it.
